And just like that, Kai turned one.
First birthday parties in Hawaii are a big deal, so naturally we threw a huge party for our friends and family. Somewhere along the lines we decided on a camping-themed party, and went all-out making decorations (most of which we never got photos of during the party, whoops!). We served chili and cornbread, smore’s mix, and of course, cake!
In true party fashion, there were a few things that didn’t go as planned. I had made Kai a separate little cake with baby-friendly ingredients (aka: healthy). In the rush of the morning, I completely forgot to whip the cream for it. I realized it about 2 seconds before the whole party began singing and in a panic, I poured the liquid cream over the cake, thinking it might look the same. Spoiler alert: it did not. My sister later admitted that it looked like a stack of pancakes and syrup. Either way, Kai didn’t complain. It was the best (er, only) cake he had ever eaten.
I always thought that first birthday parties were a celebration for the parents. Like, a “wahoo, we survived!” moment. But I have to say, Kai had SO much fun at his party. He was surrounded by his favorite people and I think he could feel the love. He even clapped after we sang the birthday song. It was adorable.
As they say, it takes a village. And we are so lucky to have a community of friends and family to help us raise our son. The party was for Kai. For us. And for them, too.
